In an interview withThe Timeson Monday, the company said it had received a letter from the FDA requesting that the drug be approved for the treatment of ED, and that the agency would not seek approval for Viagra for men who have undergone radical prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer.
“We are very pleased with our efforts to obtain FDA approval of Viagra for the treatment of ED,” said John J. Calonzo, a spokesman for Lilly. “We will continue to vigorously defend our products and our patients’ rights.”
The news was not immediately issued. In a note sent to employees, the company said it was reviewing its Viagra sales list.
A spokeswoman for Pfizer said the company would be making a statement before the FDA approves Viagra.
Viagra is a brand name for the generic drug sildenafil, which treats erectile dysfunction. It’s marketed by Eli Lilly and is available by prescription only.
Viagra’s maker, Pfizer, has been making available generic sildenafil since the 1990s. But it can cost up to 40 percent less than the brand-name drug, Viagra.
The generic sildenafil has been prescribed to men who have suffered erectile dysfunction and is known as sildenafil citrate, which is used to treat heartburn, chest pain and other symptoms.
VIDEOA recent report from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases concludes that men who have erectile dysfunction are more likely to be sexually active than those who have not.
According to the report, a study of Viagra sales data from 1998 to 2016 found that those who had erectile dysfunction were eight percent less likely to be sexually active than those who hadn’t, and three percent less likely to have prostate cancer.
In a statement, Lilly said, “Based on available data and in consultation with our sales team, we have found that Viagra sales have continued to decline over the past six years and that we are reviewing the data for any signs of an adverse event and any information we can provide as necessary to determine whether an alternative treatment or other therapeutic regimen is appropriate for our patients.”
The statement continued: “The fact that Viagra sales have continued to decline over the past six years is a result of our analysis and consultation with our sales team. We are committed to continuing to market our products and we expect them to continue to grow as they continue to take advantage of the additional revenue generated from Viagra sales, as well as the additional cost associated with obtaining a prescription for Viagra and the additional revenue generated from the sale of generic sildenafil.”
Cronin said it’s been taking steps to ensure the drug’s safety and effectiveness. The company’s U. S. patent on sildenafil expired last year, which may have triggered a price war.
Lilly said it is taking steps to protect its intellectual property. patent on Viagra expired last year, and is still developing the medication for a new clinical trial. If approved, Viagra will be available by prescription only.
In its statement, Lilly noted that Pfizer had asked the FDA to protect its intellectual property for its Viagra sales list, which includes Viagra sales from 1998 to 2016.
